The battle between Zamalek and Al-Ahly has resumed in the Egyptian Premier League after the two teams last met in the domestic Super Cup, so what does the history of head-to-head confrontations say about such situations?
Zamalek will host their rivals Al-Ahly at the Cairo Stadium tomorrow, Saturday, at the end of the 14th round of the Egyptian Premier League.
The match will be the first between Al-Ahly and Zamalek since their clash on October 28 in the Egyptian Super Cup (2021 edition).
The super encounter, which took place at the Khaza bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain, UAE, ended in favor of Al-Ahly 2-0, marking the eighth confrontation between them in this tournament.
Al-Ahly have the upper hand in the top-flight fixtures that follow the two teams’ Super Cup clashes, winning 3 times, losing twice and drawing the same.
And after the Super Summit matches that saw Al-Ahly win (as is the case now), Zamalek won twice, compared to Al-Ahmar once, and the tie dominated two games.
Al-Ahly and Zamalek will play a league match after the Supermatch for the sixth time.
The two teams played a CAF Champions League group stage match once (in 2008), while they coincidentally met in another super match (in 2020).
The top-flight matches that followed the Super Derby saw a remarkable incident, with Zamalek pulling out of Al-Ahly’s 2020 league match after excelling in a penalty shootout in the Super 4 days before.
