Eight teenage girls who met through social media were charged with killing a homeless man in Toronto on Sunday, police said.

The gang of three 13-year-olds, three 14-year-olds and two 16-year-olds attacked their 59-year-old victim in a square near the main train station just after midnight on December 18. This was reported by the Toronto Police Service.

Bystanders who saw the girls stabbing the man at York Street and University Avenue called 911, who transported the victim to a nearby hospital. The victim, who had been living in the city’s shelter system for several weeks, died from his injuries, Detective Sergeant Terry Brown said in Press conference on Tuesday.

The teenagers were found near the scene carrying “several weapons,” Brown revealed.

Detective Sergeant Terry Brown described the girls’ behavior as “swarming”.

The group of girls, whose identities are protected under Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act, may have come out with the intention of causing trouble. Police said the teenagers were involved in another altercation about two hours before they killed the homeless man.

“What is alleged to have occurred tonight would be consistent with what we traditionally call swarming or swarming-type behavior,” Brown said.

Three of the teenagers have histories with police, Brown said.

The girls live in different parts of Toronto and met through social media, although police do not yet know how long they have known each other. Authorities are still investigating why they met in the area and what their plans for the evening may have been.

All eight girls are charged with second-degree murder. They have been remanded in custody and are expected to appear again at the end of the month.
