Ghana’s Daniel Amartey said it was important to him that his rivals Uruguay did not qualify for the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup as long as they did not.

Uruguay defeated Ghana today, Friday, with two unanswered goals, at Al Janoub Stadium, in the third round of the 2022 World Cup, in Group H competitions.

But the victory was not enough, because Uruguay was called to the World Cup in the group stage for the first time since the 2002 edition, and South Korea qualified with Portugal.

Ghana could have qualified on condition of a draw or win.

Amarty spoke after the match, saying, “I told my teammates that we need a goal, but they need a goal as well, so we have to defend ourselves. If we can’t qualify, let them be eliminated.”

When asked whether it was important to him that Uruguay be eliminated, he answered decisively, “Yes, for me it was important to exclude them.”

And he continued, “It was difficult because even their defender was attacking, everyone was attacking. Uruguay needed a goal to qualify and we were defending with four players against five and three against two, but in the end we were able to defend.”

And about Andre Ayew missing a penalty kick at the start of the match before Uruguay scored its two goals, he replied, “This is football and these things happen in it. If we scored that kick, we would have killed them, but we missed it, and the match changed after that.”

Ghana wanted to eliminate Uruguay after the latter caused the Black Stars to not qualify for the 2010 World Cup semi-finals after Luis Suarez prevented a goal with his hand before winning on penalties.
