The Portuguese coach, Carlos Queiroz, left Iran’s “freedom to protest” to his team’s players while participating in the 2022 World Cup.

Iran suffers from a volatile political situation due to the killing of Mahsa Amini by the Iranian morality police nearly two months ago.

“The players are free to protest as if they were from any other country, as long as it is in accordance with the World Cup regulations and in the spirit of the game,” Queiroz said.

“But you can also express yourself on the field in a football game,” he added.

“The players have only one thing on their minds, which is to fight for qualification to the second round,” he concluded.

Iran is in Group B, along with England, America and Wales.

Tim Mally will start his World Cup career by meeting England next Monday at Khalifa Stadium.

Iran is currently witnessing numerous demonstrations, and according to reports, more than 300 people have died.

Ali Karimi, the former Iran and Bayern Munich star, was one of the first celebrities to condemn the killing of Mahsa Amini. Karimi expressed his support for the protesters on social media, becoming a symbol for them.

Football legend Ali Daei also called on the government to “Solve the problems of the Iranian people instead of using repression, violence and arrests“.

Sardar Azmoun wrote on his Instagram account: “The maximum punishment is your expulsion from the national team, which is a small price that can be paid for even one strand of Iranian women’s hair. Shame on you because you kill the people of Iran and their women live easily. Long live the Iranian woman!” What he wrote and put a black picture on his account.
