Espanyol are considering pulling out of the upcoming clash against Barcelona, according to reports in the Spanish press.
Barcelona will play against Espanyol tonight, Saturday, in the 15th round of the Spanish league.
According to Spanish radio station Cadena Kobe, Espanyol are considering pulling out of the Barcelona match following a court decision to suspend Polish striker Robert Lewandowski’s handicap.
Barcelona announced Lewandowski’s participation in the match against Espanyol after an interim measure was granted by the Court of Arbitration against the suspension imposed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on the player for a period of 3 matches. (See the details)
Espanyol issued an angry statement following the court ruling ruling Robert Lewandowski out of the Catalan derby, which read as follows:
“Espanyol find Lewandowski’s suspension unusual, 24 hours before Barcelona game and after appeals rejected by 3 different bodies.”
“Although we were a directly involved party, we were only able to reach the decision after it was requested. We were not informed as this had to be done under the procedural provisions.”
“We believe that the requirements to justify the suspension have not been met, especially since the punishment covers two different offenses (a red card and a yellow card). It was previously upheld by three different authorities until the referee’s report upheld the suspension.’
Espanyol believe it was unfair when taking into account precedents with other clubs. This season, Espanyol faced similar situations where calls were made to suspend the punishment of our players and by no means did it come to a committee meeting as it did.
Barcelona leads the league standings with 37 points, two points behind Real Madrid.
While Espanyol occupy 16th place with 12 points.
