Los Angeles FC won the MLS title for the first time in its history, by defeating Philadelphia Union on penalties in the final match.

The match, which was held at the Bank of California Stadium, its original time ended in a 2-2 draw, and its extra time ended in a 3-3 draw, then Los Angeles won 3-0 on penalties.

Los Angeles entered the list of winners, and Union Philadelphia failed to win its first historic title.

The match was marked by crazy events, its Welsh champion Gareth Bale, who returned to the stadiums after an absence of nearly a month, and was decisive as usual in the major finals.

Los Angeles opened the scoring in the 28th minute by Keelen Acosta with a wonderful direct free kick.

But Philadelphia Union returned to the meeting and equalized in the 59th minute by Hungarian Daniel Gazdag.

Excitement rose in the last moments when Colombian Jesus Murillo restored his Los Angeles team with a second goal in the 83rd minute with a header.

But Union Philadelphia imposed the original time and equalized through England defender Jack Elliot in the 85th minute with another header.

With the start of extra time, Los Angeles coach Steve Chirondolo used his Spanish winger, Cristian Tello, the former Barcelona and Real Betis player.

Then he resorted to the physically unprepared Bale in the seventh minute of extra time in place of the Mexican captain Carlos Vela.

The situation witnessed a dangerous turn of events in the 116th minute when Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crebeau was sent off in an attempt to correct the error of his two central defenders, to save a heroic goal.

Fortunately for Los Angeles, there was a change left in the coach’s sleeve, as John McCarthy entered the substitute goalkeeper in place of Ghanaian Kwadwo Opoko, who came on the bench with a quarter of an hour before the end of normal time.

The madness reached its climax in the fourth minute of stoppage time for the second overtime when Elliott scored the lead for Philadelphia Union, stunning everyone on the field.

The referee had calculated 7 minutes of injury time, and left the match to extend for an additional minute, which was enough for Bale to equalize with a header after Diego Palacios’ cross.

The 33-year-old Wales captain has scored only his third goal since joining Los Angeles last summer, the most expensive in the club’s history without a doubt.

The match moved to a penalty shootout, which Teo started wasting for Los Angeles.

But the Philadelphians were still shocked by Bale’s goal, as the trio of Gazdag, Jose Martinez and Kai Wagner were missed, respectively, with substitute goalkeeper McCarthy shining and saving two kicks.

On the other hand, Los Angeles scored all of its remaining kicks through Dennis Bwanga, Ryan Hollingchiad, and Elly Sanchez.

Italian Giorgio Chiellini won his first title with the team in turn, despite being on the bench throughout the match.

The match witnessed the attendance of a number of celebrities, led by Canadian singer Justin Bieber, and American actor Will Ferrell, who celebrated the title from the field.

Philadelphia Union had finished the regular league at the top of the eastern region, while Los Angeles, in turn, occupied the top of the western region.

Los Angeles beat Nashville in the finals, then LA Galaxy in a fierce derby, and through Austin in the semi-finals, before toppling Philadelphia in the final.

The German of Sudanese origin, Hani Mukhtar, player of Nashville, was crowned the top scorer of the season with 23 goals, while Argentine Luciano Acosta, player of Cincinnati, was the most industrialized with 19 assists.

Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake won the Philadelphia goalkeeper award for keeping 15 clean sheets.

Bale added a new title in his career about two weeks before his debut in the World Cup with his country Wales.

Bale was famous for being decisive in the final matches, as he scored in the 2014 and 2018 Champions League finals, assisted in the 2016 final, and scored a penalty kick in the same final. He also scored the famous winning goal in the 2014 King’s Cup, and scored in the 2014 Club World Cup Final.
