4 players from the Tunisian national team decided to retire from international football after being eliminated from the group stage of the World Cup.

The Tunisian national team bid farewell to the 2022 World Cup competitions, after finishing third in Group D, behind France and Australia.

According to the Tunisian radio “Diwan FM”, the quartet, Ali Maaloul (Al-Ahly), Ferjani Sassi (Al-Duhail), Youssef Al-Masakni (Al-Arabi) and Wahbi Al-Khazri (Montpellier) decided to retire from international football.

She explained that the quartet made the decision after the end of the Tunisian national team’s journey in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

She indicated that these players are expected to announce their decision in the coming period after a long career they spent with the Tunisian national team.

Maaloul, Al-Ahly defender, had commented on his country’s farewell to the 2022 World Cup, despite the victory over his French counterpart, the defending champion, at the end of the group stage.

Maaloul participated for the first time as a starter in the World Cup in Qatar, in the match in which the Carthage Eagles defeated the roosters with a goal, but the team ranked third in the group and bid farewell to the competition.

Maaloul said, “We wanted to play on our last chance against the world champions. We wanted at least, if we were not lucky enough to qualify, to come out with an honorable image befitting the Carthage Eagles.”

The Al-Ahly defender added, in statements published by the Tunisian Football Federation, “We apologize to the Tunisian fans, because we were unable to qualify for the round of 16.”

He continued, “It was possible for us to qualify for the second round after we achieved a valuable victory over the defending champion, but it is unfortunate that our fate was not in our hands.”

And he added, “We were waiting for the result of the Australia-Denmark match to be in our favour, but unfortunately the dream of Australia’s victory evaporated.”

And he continued, “We started the World Cup well by achieving a draw with Denmark, but we lost the Australian match, and therefore it was necessary to defeat France for the sake of the Tunisian fans, who attended in large numbers in Qatar.”

He concluded, “The Tunisian national team has shown itself well in recent years, and I hope that the next one will be better.”

Tunisia beat France 1-0 in the final round of the World Cup group stage to bid farewell to the tournament.(see details)
