If you watch anime, you’re used to intros that alternate between deeply emotional and serious or brazen and hellishly stupid. Sometimes it’s neither, it just runs away good feeling. (This is usually after the show in question hits a new arc.) Video games you don’t always get brilliant intros and that’s a shame. Because after watching the intro for Fire Emblem Engage, that kind of cheese is something games could do with more of.

Fire Emblem Engage is set to release in about two weeks, and along with impressions of the strategy RPG, the game’s intro cinematic has been released. Much of the intro is obviously due to his song sounding like it was made in the 90s and then kept in hiatus for three decades. It’s so anime that you almost expect it to end with a Crunchyroll commercial. The visuals try to capture the same cheesiness with colorful streaks of light matching the toothpaste-colored protagonist Alear and their companions Alfred, Timerra, Ivy, and Diamant, and shots of their in-game models showing off their special abilities. Maybe not as strong an intro as this one for 2019 Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but Engage’s the opening is fun in itself.

Fire Emblem Engage – FULL unlock [English] + Title screen

The big selling point of Get involved is that Alear and their group can use special rings to summon the main characters from before Fire emblem records like Marth from the 1990s Fire Emblem: Shadow of the Dragon and Blade of Light or Byleth of Three houses. That alone sounds cartoonish as hell (imagine the hands of previous characters raising Alear at a key moment!) and hopefully the game is able to live up to the energy that opens its opening. Games like these tend to be long, so hopefully the intro should set you up to defeat evil empires every time you start it up.

Fire Emblem Engage releases for Nintendo Switch on January 20th.
