After receiving Material You makeover last month, Google is adding another feature, namely a new tab to its Google Contacts app on Android. In addition to the Contacts and Edit & Manage tabs in the new Material You bottom bar in the Google Contacts app, you now get the new Highlights tab.

The Google Contacts highlight tab is located between the Contacts and Edit & Manage tabs in the bottom bar. Below the search bar you get the favorites grid which contains four icons where you will find four of your favorite contacts. You can easily add new contacts using the “Add” button placed in the upper right corner.

Below the favorites grid is a Recents tab where you get a list with two tabs. It starts with the View Recently section, which shows you the contacts you’ve interacted with most recently. Each of the contacts in this Recents section is accompanied by a date. Using the overflow menu, you can delete the history. There is a “Recently Added” tab that gives you access to recently added contacts.

All these changes are comes out with the new update. With all the above mentioned changes, the Google Contacts app is getting a little busy. While the Tweak & Manage tab is useful for accessing some useful tools, it’s not clear that it requires a separate tab in the bottom bar. The Google Contacts Highlighter section is more useful as it allows you to search for contacts through a network that is visually appealing and friendly.
