Andrew Tate was detained by Romanian authorities on Thursday.

After news of controversial media personality Andrew Tate’s arrest and Twitter spat with Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg made headlines, netizens were quick to point out that GRETA ultimately brought the far-right celebrity onto the Romanian authorities’ radar.

GRETA, which stands for Expert Group on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, is a European body that oversees the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings by countries.

This 15-member body is currently in the spotlight for the detention of Andrew Tate after a year-old press release from the group went viral. Civil rights lawyer and Twitter user Alejandra Caraballo tweeted a screenshot of the Council of Europe website. The screenshot links to a June 3, 2021 press release in which GRETA (the council, not the activist) called on Romania to ensure that crimes related to human trafficking lead to effective sanctions.

Now, a year and a half later, Romanian authorities are in the spotlight with the arrest of four people on suspicion of human trafficking, one of whom is Andrew Tate.

The irony of an organization named GRETA taking down Andrew Tate was not lost on netizens, who responded to Caraballo’s tweet with memes and laughter. As Twitter user viralsmile noted, “The writers really did a great job with this 2022 finale.”
