Armando Rivero, Athletic Bilbao player and former coach of the Basque club goalkeepers, spoke about the situation of his former player, Kepa, the current Chelsea goalkeeper.

In the summer of (2018), Kepa made history by moving to Chelsea in a record deal worth 80 million euros, ranking the most expensive goalkeeper ahead of Alisson Becker, who moved to Liverpool in the same Mercato from Rome.

The former Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper and Kepa’s junior coach spoke to “Yalla Koura” about the reasons for Kepa’s absence in the last period, saying: “The first year for Kepa was harsh and this situation continued until Thomas Tuchel came along with the club’s contract with Senegalese goalkeeper Edward Mendy.”

He added: “Kepa has conceded many goals, this does not mean that he is mistaken, as he is a goalkeeper who has cost Chelsea a lot of money. He is a great goalkeeper.”

Armando Rivero said: “Graham Potter (Chelsea coach) must protect him. Kepa’s confidence will come again, provided that Kepa and the team are protected.”

Graham Potter has started relying on Kepa since the Crystal Palace meeting in the ninth week of the Premier League, where the 28-year-old’s last major appearance against Tottenham Hotspur last season was among the accounts of the 23rd week.

The 51-year-old pointed out that he succeeded in promoting the most important players in Athletic Bilbao in recent years, starting with Kepa and then Unai Simon, the current goalkeeper of the Basque team and the Spain national team.

The former Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper coach for juniors talked about the competition between Kepa and Unai Simon to participate in the Qatar World Cup, saying: “The competition will be strong, especially since Luis Enrique (Spain coach) included 4 guards in the preliminary list.”

Luis Enrique had included four goalkeepers in the Spain squad: Kepa (Chelsea) – Unai Simon (Athletic Bilbao) – Robert Sanchez (Brighton) – David Raya (Brentford).

And the former Bilbao goalkeeper ended his talk about his country’s ability to compete in the World Cup: “The Spanish team has its own style, we have high-quality players, and of course our team is a candidate for the title.”

The Spanish national team is in Group E with the teams: Costa Rica – Germany – Japan.

It is worth noting that the Spanish national team has a World Cup title, especially after winning the 2010 edition in South Africa, where the “Matador” team won the title at the expense of the Netherlands, with a goal without a response.
