Democrats are particularly worried about what will happen when Congress must raise the debt limit later this year to keep the federal government from going bankrupt.

“As the ranking member of the House Budget Committee, I am deeply concerned about any future deal that would jeopardize our ability to raise the debt ceiling,” Rep. Brendan Boyle (Pennsylvania) tweeted Thursday evening. “The full faith and credit of the United States must never be placed in mortal danger.”

When Congress came perilously close to passing the debt limit in 2013, House Speaker John A. Boehner had to rely on Democratic votes to raise it. Only 87 House Republicans voted to elevate him.

The fear is that McCarthy wouldn’t want to count on Democratic votes to raise the debt limit because the same lawmakers who prevented him from becoming speaker — who made spending discipline a central element of their argument against him — would have pushed for a vote to take it down. …

“There’s this sword of Damocles over him or any other Republican speaker, so if they do something unpopular with one of the rebels, he’s at risk of losing his job,” said Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.).
