ERIE COUNTY — Update at 3:50 a.m. ET, Dec. 24:

Nearly 50 vehicles crashed in a pileup, including 15 commercial trucks, that left four people dead and scores injured, leading to the closure of an Ohio highway Friday afternoon.

News Center 7 initially reported that the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the crash on eastbound I-80 between Route 53 and State Route 4 in Groton Township in Erie County.

According to the highway remained closed for about nine hours The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Twitter page.

During that time, troopers dealt with the four confirmed fatalities, the multiple injured people and the multiple vehicles piled up in the crash.

So far, the westbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike between US-250 exit 118 and state Route 53 exit 91 have reopened, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said in a tweet.

However, the eastbound lanes remain closed.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

“This is a stark reminder of what can happen when you get behind the wheel and try to drive in bad weather,” warned Sergeant Ryan Purpura of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

“We ask you not to travel unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to travel, we ask that you take precautions, drive slowly, be patient, wear your seat belt and increase your following distance,” Purpura continued.

Update at 9:20 p.m. ET, December 23:

A nearly 50-vehicle pileup that left four dead and scores injured closed an Ohio highway Friday afternoon.

Ohio State Highway Patrol crews are responding to multiple crashes on eastbound I-80 between Route 53 and State Route 4 in Groton Township in Erie County.

Police have confirmed that at least four people have died and there are reports of multiple injuries.

Buses were used to take people from their vehicles to a local facility so they could stay warm.

As of 9:00 p.m., the road remains closed in both directions between exit 91 and exit 118 while crews work to clear 15 commercial vehicles from the roadway.

OSP said it would provide details of the crash to their Twitter.
