Manchester City set up a League Cup summit clash against Liverpool when they beat them 3-2 on Thursday to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The Norwegian Haaland, the Algerian Riyad Mahrez and the Dutchman Aki (10, 47 and 58) turned in the doors of City, and the Portuguese Fabio Carvaio and the Egyptian Mohamed Salah (20 and 48) signed for the guests.

Manchester City previously knocked out fierce rivals Chelsea in the last round when they beat them 2-0.

Liverpool won the title last season at the expense of Chelsea on penalties.

Lack and weight

The two teams played the match in the absence of many of the main pillars who participated with their country’s national teams in the World Cup finals in Qatar, most notably Brazil’s Ederson, Alisson Becker, Netherlands’ Virgil van Dijk, France’s Konate Firmino, Alexander Trent Arnold, Argentina’s Julián Alvarez and Portugal’s Robin Diaz, in addition to Liverpool’s Luis Diaz of Colombia and Portugal’s Diogo Jota and Brazil’s Firmino.

Many key players were also on the bench as they had just returned to both teams after their World Cup appearances, most notably City stars Phil Foden, Stones, Jack Grealish and Portugal’s Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo.
