Chris Hipkins, New Zealand’s education minister, is poised to replace Jacinda Ardern as prime minister, following her shock resignation announcement earlier this week.

Hipkins was the only candidate nominated for leader of the ruling Labor Party, the party announced in a statement on Saturday morning.

“The Labor caucus will meet at 1pm on Sunday to support the nomination and confirm Chris Hipkins as leader,” Labor Party chairman Duncan Webb said in a statement.

Ardern said Thursday she would step down for a new leader, saying she did not believe she had the energy to seek re-election in October’s election.

Speaking at a press conference at the time, Ardern said her term would end by February 7, when she expected a new Labor prime minister to be sworn in – though “depending on the process that could be sooner”.

Hipkins previously led New Zealand’s management of the pandemic as Minister for Covid-19 Response in Ardern’s office.

According to his official profile, Hipkins first joining the government as a senior adviser to two education ministers and later in the cabinet of then prime minister Helen Clark.

He entered parliament in 2008 and became education spokesman in early 2013.
