RB Leipzig announced that Germany striker Timo Werner will miss the World Cup scheduled to be held in Qatar this month, due to an injury.
Werner was injured in the 16th minute of Leipzig’s match against Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine, which was held yesterday, Wednesday, in the final round of the group stage of the Champions League.
“Werner suffered an ankle injury during the Shakhtar Donetsk match,” which ended in favor of the German team, Leipzig said in an official statement today, Thursday.
Leipzig added, “The medical tests that Werner underwent today proved that the player had a tear in his left ankle, and therefore he will miss the remainder of 2022.”
Werner returned to Leipzig from Chelsea during the last summer transfer period, and participated in 16 matches in all competitions, during which he scored 9 goals and provided 4 assists.
Werner played 55 international matches with the German national team, during which he scored 24 goals, and participated in the 2018 World Cup and European Nations Cup 2020.
The World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18.
Germany is in Group E, which includes Spain, Costa Rica and Japan.
