The Lagos State Police Command on Monday condemned the killing of a lawyer, Bolanle Rahim, by a yet-to-be-identified policeman in the Ajah area of the state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement said the erring police officer was detained as the command commenced investigations into the death of the victim on Christmas Day.

Describing the situation as too much in the Aja area of the state, Hundeyin said the police officer failed to follow standard operating procedures, adding that a re-evaluation of police rules of engagement would be undertaken to put an end to such cases.

Hundeyin said: “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Abiodun Alabi, has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Barrister Bolanle Rahim, who was shot dead by a police officer in Aja on Sunday, December 25, 2022.

“On the direction of the KP, the erring policeman has since been detained along with his team members. The CP also directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, for thorough investigation.

“This has become too much, especially considering that a similar incident happened in the same location less than three weeks ago. The reprehensible incident defies standard operating procedures and rules of engagement of forces and is disturbing to say the least.

“Beyond this incident, the Nigeria Police Force will review its rules of operation in a bid to end such ugly, avoidable incidents.”

Hundeyin said the Lagos State Police Command is appealing to the good people and residents of the state to remain calm as the command is already in constant communication with the Nigerian Bar Association and other stakeholders to ensure that justice prevails in the matter.
