Prince Harry has revealed that in the decades following the death of his mother Princess Diana, he turned to “heavy drinking” and – and tried a series of mind-altering hard drugs.

During an interview with Anderson Cooper on Sunday night at “60 Minutes”, Harry, 38, answered questions about his narrative book, Spares, which comes out on Tuesday.

All week Harry has been on a promotional tour for the book, which is as full of details as William engaging in physical self-harm with Harry over Meghan Markle and Harry has frozen todger during the wedding of William and Kate Middleton.

Cooper, 55, questioned Harry about his admitted substance abuse – including alcohol, cocaine, marijuana and more – in the past. Harry said he did it in response to his mother’s death.

“It was obvious to us as children the involvement of the British press in our mother’s misfortune and I had a lot of anger inside me which thankfully I never expressed to anyone,” he said. “But I resorted to a lot of alcohol. Because I wanted to take the feeling away or I wanted to distract myself from how…whatever I was thinking. I would also resort to drugs.”

He also said he felt it use of psychedelicsayahuasca, psilocybin, mushrooms, helped him.

“I would never recommend that people do this recreationally – but if you do it with the right people, if you’re suffering from tremendous loss or grief or trauma, then these things have a way of acting as medicine. For me, they cleared the windshield, the windshield of the misery of loss. They cleared this idea I had in my head that my mom, that I had to cry to prove to my mom that I miss her. When really all she wanted was for me to be happy.

Part of the reason he turned to drinking and drugs was this after the tragic death of Princess Diana car crash in 1997, Harry and William shared “similar thoughts” in the belief that she was truly gone.

“Maybe this is all part of a plan,” Harry said. “After that she will call us and that we will go and join her, yes.”

He said he had held that belief for “years.” But when he was 20, he asked to see the police report of the crash that killed his mother to have “proof”.

“Proof that she was in the car. Evidence that she was injured. And proof that the same paparazzi who chased her down the tunnel were the ones who took pictures – pictures of her lying half-dead in the back seat of the car,” he said.

When Cooper asked Harry if he thought he had all the answers about what really happened when Princess Diana died in 1997, Harry said: “The truth is known, no. I don’t think I do. And I don’t think my brother either. I don’t think the world does.”
