The Justice Department’s investigation into classified documents found in President Joe Biden’s home and former private office will be overseen by Robert Hurr, a former U.S. attorney in Maryland who had a “long and distinguished career as a prosecutor,” Attorney General Merrick Garland announced in Thursday.

Hurr was nominated as US Attorney for Maryland by then-President Donald Trump in 2017 and served in that role until his resignation in 2021. In his job, Hurr played a key role in a number of high-profile cases, including children’s book scandal involving then-Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh which led to Pugh being sentenced to three years in prison.

Most recently in private practice in Washington, DC.

“Rob’s been around long enough — he knows what he’s getting into,” Trump’s former deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, whom Hurr served for a time as a senior adviser, told CNN on Thursday.

“I think he understands the need to ignore politics and focus on what matters,” Rosenstein added.

In announcing the appointment, Garland noted that Hurr “leads some of the department’s more important national security, public corruption and other important issues.”

“I will ensure that Mr Hur gets all the resources he needs to do his job,” he said.

Hurr pledged Thursday to “conduct the mandated investigation with fair, impartial and dispassionate judgment.”

“I intend to pursue the facts quickly and thoroughly, without fear or favor, and I will respect the trust placed in me to perform this service,” he said in a statement.

Hurr also served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Maryland before serving as Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General at the Department of Justice.

Prior to working at the Department of Justice, Hurr clerked for Chief Justice William Rehnquist and also for federal appeals judge Alex Kozinski.

“Despite the fact that he had a gilded resume, he was just a humble, hard worker,” said Stuart Berman, who was a supervisor in the Maryland State Attorney’s Office when Hurr worked there as a reference prosecutor.

Berman noted the wide variety of cases Hurr has taken on as a prosecutor, including felony, prescription fraud and mortgage fraud.

Hurr was unanimously confirmed by the Senate to serve as U.S. attorney in 2018, and at the time he received praise from both of Maryland’s Democratic senators, who expressed confidence in his ability to address critical issues facing the state .

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, praised the appointment Thursday.

“Former Maryland U.S. Attorney Rob Hurr is a prosecutor of the highest caliber and integrity,” Hogan said in a statement. “I believe in his ability to get the facts and hold the authorities to account.” No one is above the law in this country.”

Thursday’s announcement came hours after the White House counsel’s office said in a statement that Biden aides had found documents with classified markings in two locations at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.

The initial batch of documents discovered when Biden’s personal lawyers packed files in his former private office in DC contained 10 classified documents, including US intelligence material and briefing notes on Ukraine, Iran and the UK.

At the Justice Department, Hurr worked with Rosenstein on special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, the former deputy attorney general told CNN.

Hur “was my point person, and he had bi-weekly meetings with Mueller’s team and then briefed me on the progress of the Russian special counsel’s investigation,” Rosenstein said. “So he’s seen that firsthand and knows that you don’t have to be influenced by politics and make decisions based on the facts and the law and the policy of the Department of Justice, and I think we can count on Rob to do this.’

Rosenstein added, “Rob, like many people I’ve worked with at the Department of Justice, believes in the importance of engaging in public service and feels a sense of responsibility. So it’s hard to say no when someone calls you to do what you know is going to be an unpleasant job.”

While serving as Rosenstein’s top aide, Hurr also appeared at a Trump White House press conference in July 2017 touting the administration’s efforts to crack down on the notorious MS-13 gang. The appearance at the podium for a White House news conference was unusual, as the Justice Department has typically sought to distance itself from the White House on matters that could be seen as political in nature.
