The Spanish Football Federation announced today, Friday, that Luis Enrique, the coach of the El Matador team, excluded Jose Gaia, the Valencia defender, from the list of the team participating in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, due to injury, while summoning Alejandro Balde, the Barcelona player, instead.
Jaya was injured in Spain’s training before the friendly match with Jordan, which was held on Thursday evening, and ended with the European team winning 3-0.
Spanish press reports indicated that Gaia’s injury would keep him out of the World Cup, until the official confirmation came this afternoon.
The Spanish Federation said in a statement on its official page on the social networking site “Facebook”, that my country will not be able to compete in the World Cup with the national team, and that it will return to Spain within the next few hours.
The Federation also confirmed in another statement that Baldi will replace Jaya in the national team list.
Baldi, the 21-year-old, did not play any official match with the Spain national team before, knowing that he was the most likely candidate to compensate for Gaia’s absence during the past hours, according to Spanish newspapers.
Spain is playing in Group E in the World Cup, which includes Germany, Costa Rica and Japan.
The 2010 champion will start his career in the World Cup in Qatar by facing Costa Rica at Al-Thumama Stadium next Wednesday.
