  • Russian attacks have been reported in at least seven regions in eastern and southern Ukraine, despite Moscow’s declaration of a 36-hour ceasefire from noon Friday to midnight Saturday for Orthodox Christmas. At least three people were killed.

  • Russian troops are under fire Kherson region 39 times on Friday, according to Governor Yaroslav Janushevich. Residential buildings and a fire station building were shelled in the liberated city of Kherson, where a first responder was killed. Seven civilians were also injured in the area.

  • The Ukrainian military said two were killed and 13 wounded in the Russian shelling of Bakhmut, eastern Ukraine, during the alleged ceasefire. The two dead are a 66-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman.

  • Russian troops are “terrorizing” civilians in the northeastern region of Kharkiv, its governor Oleg Sinegubov said. No casualties were reported, but residential and commercial buildings continued to be shelled.

  • Russian forces shelled Ukrainian positions 14 times and stormed a settlement three times in the frontline eastern Luhansk region in the first three hours of the alleged ceasefire, Governor Serhii Heidai was quoted as saying by Reuters. He heard explosions from what Ukrainian front-line troops described as incoming Russian missile fire. The Ukrainians returned fire from tanks.

  • The Russian-appointed governor of the occupied Crimean city of Sevastopol said air defenses shot down a drone in an apparent attack at the port where the Russian Black Sea Fleet is based. Mihail Razvozhaev claims that the incident happened early on Saturday.

  • The UK Ministry of Defence said fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces continued at a “routine level” over the Orthodox Christmas period. The ministry’s daily intelligence briefing said the fighting was concentrated in heavily wooded terrain west of the town of Kremina in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk province, where “fighting has shifted to infantry fighting, often at short range.”

  • The US has asked Italy to provide air defense systems to Ukraine as soon as possible. Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that the request was made in a conversation between US national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Francesco Talo, an adviser to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the US for including armored tank-killing vehicles in its own the latest multi-billion dollar package of military aid, stating that they are “just what is needed”. The latest US military aid, announced Friday by the White House, was the largest to date for Kyiv and included Bradley armored vehicles for the first time.

  • Services were held in Ukraine to mark the first Orthodox Christmas since Russia invaded the country last year. Metropolitan Epiphany presided over the Christmas service at the Assumption Cathedral in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in the Ukrainian capital.

  • Ukraine has updated the number of Russian soldiers it says it has killed to 110,740. The General Staff of the Armed Forces said on Saturday that another 490 soldiers were killed on Friday.
