Someone made a mod for the original Final Fantasy VII which adds full voice acting to Square Enix’s mega-popular ’97 RPG.

The FFVII voice mod called Echo S 7was created by Tsunamods, a team of modders who specialize in re-textures and 3D model improvements for Final Fantasy series. According to Tsunamods, the Echo-S 7 mod was created with voice actors from the YouTube channel Studio shots performs his voice cues and characteristic barks. Be sure to check that your headphones are firmly connected to your laptop before playing, because these low-poly eco-terrorists (gentle) swear a lot. The Echo-S 7 is out today (how lucky).

“The script used in this mod is actually the original Japanese script that has been translated correctly, compared to the original bad one we got,” Tsunamods wrote in the video’s description box. “Even though it’s clear, we’ve changed it to sound more human because text boxes can be read very differently compared to spoken words.”

For example, instead of having Tifa repeat the line “Shake it off. Let’s try again” an infinite number of times, while she, Cloud, and Barrett have to press a button at the same time in the opening reactor sequence, Tifa will gradually become more frustrated if players fail the infamous minigame.

“Looks like we may have added too much profanity specifically in the trailer,” Tsunamods wrote on YouTube. “The mod doesn’t really contain that much at all, it just happened in areas/features we wanted to show off. So we may have misrepresented ourselves a bit there.

The voice acting on the Echo-S 7 is pretty fantastic. However, I’m biased because his vocal performances sound like a playback version of Team Four Stars Final Fantasy Machinabridged YouTube series. Before Echo-S 7, Tsunamods made a quality of life mod for FFVII Named Cosmo Memory which replaced the game’s sound effects and added ambient field sounds and battle sounds, among other features. Tsunamods documented their workflow on the Echo-S 7 on their Twitch channel.

Let’s assume you’re part of the silent majority Final Fantasy faithful who believe Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX deserve a little voice mod along with Square Enix’s poster boy, FFVII. In that case you’re in luck because Tsunamods is also working on voice mods for these titles and let us know in a comment on my city not to fear that they too “will take 7 years”.

“I promise you this crap took us years to make. And we don’t get paid either,” wrote Tsunamods. “We’re not going to waste all this time with the intention of ruining the very game we’ve loved and worked on for years.”
