UK to crackdown on illegal immigrants: Block access to banks, rental housing and driving licenses

In an effort to deal with illegal immigration, the the UK government blocks migrants’ access to bank accounts, rental housing and their driver’s licenses, among other services.

On the side Minister of ImmigrationRobert Jerrick, is heading a new taskforce to ensure “only those who qualify can work, receive benefits or access public services”, reports The Telegraph.

“We’re making good on our promise to step up crackdowns on illegal employers: new enforcement task force will ensure only those who qualify can work, access public services and benefits,” Jerrick tweeted Sunday.

The new initiative will include a 50% increase in immigration visits to construction sites, car washes and gig economy companies.

The government has already stepped up enforcement visits in recent months. There have been more than 1,150 such visits — a 10 percent increase — since mid-December, according to Telegraph. That makes about 362 arrests.

Jenrick argued that black market jobs hurt communities by “cheating honest workers into employment, putting vulnerable people at risk and defrauding the public purse,” he said.

“Our immigration enforcement teams are working around the clock to bring those who break our laws to justice. Our priority is to tackle this crime and empower law enforcement to remove illegal migrants,” he said.
