Back in September 2021Gmail got a new ‘Google Illustrations’ tool that lets you create a custom profile picture, and it’s now available in Google Contacts.

At launch, this feature allows you to create a custom Google profile picture for your account. In Contacts for Android, it is available when editing any contact. Artwork appears as the first tab next to Google Photos and Device Photos.

The collections (Animals, Cities & Places, Food, Hobbies & Interests, Nature & Sports & Recreation) are unchanged, but Google has certainly added more to each of the subcategories since launch.

Once you’ve selected an image and are in the editor, there’s a new “Quick Crop” feature that highlights interesting parts of an image and joins the other color tools that make Google Illustrations quite immersive.

This change was introduced to Google Contacts relatively recently.

Meanwhile, Google Messages introduced a branded FAB (Floating Action Button) a few weeks ago. “Start Chat” is now accompanied by the message logo that Google uses for the themed app icon.

Speaking of the app, A/B testing the redesigned photo selection tool, delivery/read indicatorsor react with any emoji yet to be widely distributed group E2EE sees slightly wider availability.
